Careers in Medical Lab Technology
Medical laboratory technicians (MLTs) are skilled workers who play an essential role in the health care field.
These technicians collect, process and analyze blood, cells and other substances. They also monitor and maintain quality control, perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment, apply basic scientific principles and learn new techniques.
MLTs work for health care providers, public agencies and private industry, including the fast-growing biotech sector. They are often certified by professional organizations.
Medical Lab Technology at De Anza
The Medical Laboratory Technology program at De Anza College prepares students to work in a variety of clinical and research laboratory settings. Courses combine classroom lectures, lab work and practical training to foster the analytical and problem-solving skills required in this field.
Students can earn a certificate or a degree, and will be eligible to sit for national certification exams offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the American Association of Bioanalysts.
The De Anza College MLT Program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Library Sciences. The program is approved by the Laboratory Field Services unit of the California Department of Health Services.
While the department does not currently offer a degree or certificate program, you may be able to apply courses in this department toward General Education requirements.
