Telling Your Story
Presentation and narrative due in class on
Monday, September 28
Two to three pages, typed, printed out, and stapled.
The presentation and narrative count as 10% of your final grade.
This assignment consists of both a presentation and a write-up. We will break up into groups of four or five, and each of you will introduce yourselves in a five to ten-minute presentation to the other people in your group. For the written part of this assignment you should have an introduction and conclusion, and I suggest that you have at least three paragraphs in the body of your essay:
- At least one paragraph about cultural education in school. What did your cultural education consist of? Your Literature and History classes were most likely the most important sites for your cultural education. Briefly describe what you learned.
- At least one paragraph about formal cultural education with a formal curriculum that was created by a community organization. Examples of places where this might happen are Chinese school, Vietnamese school, Filipino Youth Coalition, or in school clubs. Briefly describe what you learned.
- At least one paragraph about informal education. This is cultural education from immediate family, from extended family, from peers, and/or through research that you did independently. Briefly describe what you learned.
For the presentation, you will present only for the other people in your group. You will not present for the whole class. You should use the written component of this assignment for your presentation, but you should not just read your narrative to the other people in your group.
