Hiring Position Prioritization – The time was opened for questions and discussion. It was noted that the Physics department has modeled best practices in their hiring of new faculty.
The faculty racial diversity data was reviewed by the Deans. This is self-reported identification data collected at the time of hire. Christina stated that as a result of the discussions in IPBT this year, she will work to find means of more complete and correct data now that new standards are in place.
Questions regarding how to weigh data such as faculty racial diversity data were raised. Christina underscored that data was collected and displayed on IPBT website because the data was requested. There is no one way to use the data. Everyone is charged with making decisions that are informed by the amalgamation of the data. It was underscored that departments are not required to hire based on equity guidelines but rather hire best individual for the position.
Physics department has stated a commitment to model the MPS program to improve the student success rate in Physics. In answer to a question regarding how this would be supported, Dean Jerry Rosenberg stated the focus will be on calculus-based Physics since that is where success rates are lowest. In 2021-22 MPS program for calculus students will be available. This should help the students who will move on to Physics.
Heidi reviewed the form that IPBT members will be using to rank the positions. The consensus was that everyone would prefer to work on their prioritization individually. IPBT members are asked to be prepared at meeting of June 1st to place their rankings into the form. Erik W suggested the outcome from the ranking form would be the poll to inform further discussion followed by the final vote. Concern was expressed that this process of poll-discussion-affirmation would be difficult for Deans of divisions seeking position(s). This point will be revisited next meeting.
The final decision on the two positions can be made June 1st or June 8th and recommendation made to College Council on June 10th.
