Math Sequence for Transfer Students in Non-Business and Non-STEM Majors
Majors from the arts, humanities, languages and social sciences, or non-business and non-STEM majors requiring only one transferable math class typically require statistics (Math 10), college algebra (Math 31 Precalculus 1), math for liberal arts (Math 44), or math for elementary school teachers (Math 46). There are multiple paths to completing transferable math. Check assist.org to verify your major and IGETC requirements for transfer. If you have any advanced placement (AP) scores of 3 or higher in Statistics or Calculus you may not need to enroll in additional math courses or be placed at a higher level--to verify, visit the PSME Division. You have a choice to make, read your options below:
Path to Completing Statistics (Math 10)
The statistics course Math 10 is transferable to most in-state, out-of-state and private institutions. It is a great choice for students that have not completed algebra. This course is similar to a biology course, in that you will learn new vocabulary with some math formulas--the focus is not just on how to find the numbers, but interpreting them as well. Some students will be placed into a corequisite course. Check your placement in MyPortal.
Math 210X and Math 10 - for students that choose to complete statistics and are placed into the corequisite support course Math 210X and Math 10, If you passed the AP Statistics Exam with a score of 3 or better, see CSU AP link and UC AP link.
Math 10 Statistics – for students that choose to complete statistics and place into Math 10. If you passed the AP Statistics Exam with a score of 3 or better, see CSU AP link and UC AP link.
MPS Math 10 Statistics - for students that choose to complete statistics and desire extra support in mathematics. If you passed the AP Statistics Exam with a score of 3 or better, see CSU AP link and UC AP link.
Path to Completing College Algebra (Math 31)
This college algebra course Math 31 (Precalculus 1) is transferable to most in-state, out-of-state and private institutions. It is a great choice for students that have completed algebra, precalculus or calculus in high school or elsewhere. If you know the algebra rules, Math 31 has those same rules and you are building on your previous knowledge unlike statistics, which will mostly be new concepts in the form of word problems.
Math 231 and Math 31 - for students that choose to complete college algebra and are placed into the corequisite support course Math 231 with Math 31.
Math 31 - for students that choose to complete college algebra.
MPS Math 31 – for students that choose to complete college algebra and desire extra support in mathematics.
Path to Completing Math for Liberal Arts (Math 44) or Elementary School Teachers (Math 46)
These math courses are transferable to most in-state, out-of-state and private institutions. Math 44 is a great choice for students that are Liberal Arts majors and enjoy completing puzzles that require a lot of critical thinking. Math 46 is a great choice for students aspiring to be elementary school teachers.
Math 44 - for liberal arts students that choose liberal arts math instead of statistics or college algebra.
Math 46 - for future elementary school teachers that may have math for elementary school teachers as a requirement, or that choose this class over statistics or college algebra.
