De Anza College Athletics Named 2010-2011 Coast Conference All-Sports Winner
Congratulations to all the student-athletes, coaches and staff who are members of De Anza College Athletics. For the fourth year in a row, De Anza was named the 2010-11 Coast Conference All-Sports Award Winner in May of this year.
Women’s Cross Country Team Wins Back-to-Back Championships
Congratulations to Cross County Coach Nick Mattis and his team, who won the Coast Conference Championship for the third time in four years on Oct. 26, and the NorCal Championship on Nov. 5, the second championship since 2005. Four De Anza team members made the Second Team All-Norcal:
- Oddessy Tapia, 8th place
- Alexa Torres, 11th place
- Dominique Guinnane, 12th place
- Kristine Talbot, 14th place
Freshman Tapia was named overall individual Coast Conference Champion. Mattis was named the 2011 NorCal Coach of the Year for Cross Country, and the team qualified for the state meet.
Men’s Cross Country Team Makes Strong Showing
Coach Mattis’ Men’s Cross Country Team finished in fourth place in the Coast Conference, with sophomore Daniel Damian earning top runner on the team. The men’s team also qualified for the state meet, which makes this the fifth year in a row that both men’s and women’s teams have qualified for that competition.
Halls of Fame Tap Former and Current De Anza Coaches
Art Lambert, retired Water Polo coach, was inducted into the San Jose Sports Authority Hall of Fame on Nov. 9, 2011. Lambert coached at De Anza, San Jose State and Stanford. He was the coach for the 1971 state championship team at De Anza, and joined Rudy Gallindo, Dan Pastorini, Peter Ueberroth and Kristi Yamaguchi in this year’s induction.
Bob Wegman, retired Water Polo coach, will be inducted into the California Community College Water Polo Coaches Hall of Fame on Nov. 19 at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Wegman coached two Men’s Water Polo teams to the State Championships.
Coach Kulwant Singh will be inducted into the California Community College Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame on Dec. 1 at Cosumnes River College in Elk Grove. Singh’s Women’s Soccer Team won two State Championships, four NorCal Championships and one California Scholar-Team Award. His Men’s Soccer Team also won two State Championships and one California Scholar-Team Award.
Student Newspaper Wins Awards
Several De Anza journalism students and instructor Cecilia Deck attended the Journalism Association of Community College’s (JACC) annual statewide convention in April 2011 in Sacramento and brought home eight awards, including General Excellence for La Voz Weekly. De Anza competed against approximately 50 community colleges.

De Anza Students Participate in National Art Competition
Two De Anza students, Sea Eun Kook and Irina Polyakova, entered the League for Innovation in the Community College’s 25th annual Student Art Competition, hosted this year by Miami Dade College. Kook’s “Landscape of Library” is a scene from De Anza’s library and expresses the beauty of books. Polyakova’s “Corner Table” evokes the culture and beauty of past centuries. Photos of the entries were published in the competition’s booklet.
De Anza’s Flea Market One of Most Popular in Northern California
In the February 2011 edition of AAA’s Via Magazine, De Anza’s Flea Market was rated a Readers’ Favorite. Gilroy resident Shirley Trevino called it a “little treasure” with “incredible collectibles, vintage clothing, homemade gifts, jewelry and more.”
Associate Registrar Honored for Innovation
Pat Fifield, who just retired, was given the Spirit of Innovation award for her work with Credentials, Inc. in developing the electronic transcript arrangement with the University of Phoenix. The award was announced in April at the annual California Association of Community College Registrars and Admissions Officers conference.
De Anza Dining Featured in Culinary Magazine
On-Campus Hospitality Magazine offers a review of “Grilled Cheese Mania” at De Anza College in its September 2011 edition. Building upon last year’s successful World Risotto tour, De Anza Dining offered six variations on the traditional grilled cheese sandwich during the summer. Campus Center Director Patrick Gannon and Executive Chef Paul Figliomeni cooked up the original grilled cheese recipes for students and purchases went up by 41 percent. The surprising most popular choice: grilled cheese Spam.
Arts & Schools Program Honored by State
The Euphrat Museum’s Arts & Schools Program was part of a statewide award in September 2011, “Outstanding Stormwater News, Information, Outreach and Media Program,” from the California Stormwater Quality Association (CASQA) for its development and implementation of Sunnyvale’s Earth Care Kidz youth program. The program’s goal is to teach youth to take responsibility for their actions and choices, which can have positive impacts on their neighborhood and environment.
English Instructor Named Poet Laureate
Dave Denny was recently named the inaugural Cupertino Poet Laureate for a two-year term. He was inducted at a special ceremony in late September, and hosted his first poetry reading as laureate in October. First Words featured poetry readings from several poets from the local community and drew more than 40 people. Denny’s book “The Plebeian on the Front Porch” will be released in January through Finish Line Press.
Asian American Studies Department Honored by County
Santa Clara County named De Anza’s Asian American Studies Department its “Asian American Hero” this year. Department Chair Michael Chang and other Asian American Studies faculty were invited to a special luncheon on Nov. 1, where each faculty member received a recognition certificate.
Four FHDA Employees Give Presentations at Banner Conference
Cindy Castillo (Financial Aid), Rachel Tai (Cashiering), Kathleen Moberg (Admissions & Records), and Susan Malmgren (District EIS Training) all made session presentations on Financial Aid Disbursements and the Student Dashboard at the 3CBG (California Community College Banner Group) conference in September.
TRG Produces Financial Aid Video
Marty Kahn and his Technology Resources Group produced a short video in August for the Financial Aid Office website. The video gives students a brief introduction on how to apply for financial aid. This is one of dozens of instructional and student support videos produced last year for Instruction and Student Services. Creating the video was as simple as Financial Aid Director Cindy Castillo sitting down in the studio and describing how to apply for financial aid. Outreach Office Hosts Conferences
The Office of Outreach and Relations with Schools hosted its annual High School Partners Conference at De Anza on Oct. 27. More than 40 high schools and community-based organizations were represented at the event. Outreach will be holding other major events this year, including:

President Murphy Goes to Washington
President Brian Murphy participated on Jan. 10 in the White House event “For Democracy’s Future: Education Reclaims Our Civic Mission.” A streaming video was set up in the Fireside Room in the Campus Center for anyone wishing to view the live discussion. Many members of the college community watched from their computers.
Murphy participated in the first panel discussion, “Higher Education’s Call for Democratic Engagement,” following a welcome and remarks from Martha Kanter, U.S. Under Secretary of Education, and Carol Schneider, president, Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). Panelists with Murphy were Richard Guarasci, president, Wagner College, and Azar Nafisi, author and executive director of cultural conversations and foreign policy visiting fellow, Johns Hopkins University. James Leach, chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities, moderated the session. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan spoke at the conclusion of the event. Auto Tech Forms Alliance for Green Automotive Training
De Anza College Automotive Technology, FHDA Contract Education and the Green Transportation Workforce Development (GTWD) company have formed an alliance that will focus on developing training for green automotive programs. The alliance intends to serve at least 500 students over a two-year period. Training will include electric, hybrid, propane, compressed natural gas vehicles, and infrastructure.
The mission of GTWD is to promote green jobs and green technology by providing in-depth training on alternative fuel vehicles, including electric, compressed natural gas (CNG) and propane. Auto Tech is working with GTWD, the Green Team, California Energy Commission Workforce funding, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, various investors, and corporate sponsors to fund this joint development green automotive program.
FYE Program Honored by California Community College Board of Governors
De Anza College’s First Year Experience (FYE) program was recently awarded an honorable mention in the Board of Governors Exemplary Program Awards for 2011, announced by California Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott at the Jan. 10 BOG meeting. FYE, which links academic support and student services, was singled out for its student success rate (passing classes with a C or better) of 84 percent.
FYE is a learning community that integrates multiple fields of study and community engagement in a yearlong program, which begins with the Summer Bridge program, designed to help high school students transition to college. First-time, first-generation college students whose English placement is in EWRT and READ 200 or 211 are eligible for FYE. Students must commit to participating in the FYE learning community for the full academic year.
For the Board of Governors Exemplary Program Awards, each of the system’s 112 colleges may nominate one program. Academic senates form selection committees of students, staff, administrators and faculty, and forward their program of choice to the BOG to be evaluated. The awards recognize programs that show evidence of their overall success, contribute to faculty engagement, respond to the needs of the faculty and the college, and demonstrate support of the community college mission. The programs are also scored on how they could be used as models for other community colleges.
California History Center Director Honored
In December 2011, Tom Izu received a Beacon of Light Award from IRIS: Immigrant Relations and Integration Services, a program of the Office of Human Relations. The award is given to individuals and organizations for advancing immigrant rights, educating the larger society about immigrants and immigration, improving the quality of life for immigrant families. For 18 years, Izu has advocated for using local history education as a way of promoting diversity and multiculturalism.
Math Instructor Receives National Award
In November in Austin, Texas, Barbara Illowsky was presented with a national award from the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. The Teaching Excellence Award is intended for educators who have made outstanding contributions to mathematics or mathematics education at a two-year college. Teaching excellence is the main focus of the award. Illowsky was one of six national awardees for 2011.
Two Film/TV Instructors Honored
Susan Tavernetti of the De Anza College Film/TV Department contributed the chapter “Writing Indian Stereotypes: The Role of the Screenplay in American Westerns” in “American Indians and Popular Culture,” a 2-volume set available in February 2012 (Praeger Publishers). Tavernetti also won second and third place awards in the Entertainment Review category for non-daily newspapers in the Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards Competition. She was honored for her Palo Alto Weekly reviews of “The White Ribbon” and “The King’s Speech,” respectively, at the annual San Francisco Peninsula Press Club’s Evening of Excellence held in 2011.
Film/TV instructor Glenn Lovell, film critic-reporter at CinemaDope.com, was granted membership to the Online Film Critics Society in September. Besides OFCS, Lovell’s CinemaDope reviews are now running at Patch.com, Rotten Tomatoes and NAJP’s ARTicles. Lovell’s article “The Golden Autumn of Hollywood’s Boy Wonder” has been selected to appear in the upcoming “Collected Interviews with John Frankenheimer” (Scarecrow Press). His essays on “The Power” and “Donovan’s Brain” will appear in “When World’s Collide: A Critical Companion to SF Film Adaptations” (Liverpool University Press).

Art Instructor Shows in Monterey
Paul Roehl, part-time art instructor, has a one-man show called “Monterey Now,” which features his landscape paintings at the Monterey Museum of Art, now through March 4.
Music Instructor’s Photography Graces Historic Lodge
Dan Mitchell’s photographs of Death Valley have been installed in guest rooms at historic Stovepipe Wells Lodge in Death Valley National Park. His photographs have been featured in two Bay Area exhibits and published in Backpacker and Yosemite Conservancy magazines.
Math Instructor Interviewed on NPR News
Karl Schaffer offered a mini-course on math and dance to a crowd of attendees at the Joint Mathematics Meeting in Boston in January. Schaffer told radio host Ari Daniel Shapiro that he wanted the participants to experience creating movement phrases and performing them for each other in ways that dealt with mathematical concepts.

Men’s Cross Country Team Honored
Congratulations to Coach Nick Mattis and his team for being the only team in the district to be recognized as a California Scholar Team this year. The Scholar Team Award is the highest academic team achievement given annually by the California Community College Athletics Association (CCCAA). All team members must excel academically with a total GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate better than average accomplishments in intercollegiate athletic competition. The team earned a 3.31 GPA and was recognized at the CCCAA Convention in San Mateo on April 3. This marks De Anza’s 10th and Mattis’ 3rd California Scholar Team.
Men’s Soccer Team Member Honored
Congratulations to student athlete Eric Bettencourt, named an All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in January. Bettencourt is the 22nd Men’s Soccer All-American. Kudos also to coaches Mark Landefeld and Colin Lindores.
Football Team Member Honored
Congratulations to Robertson Daniel for being named an All-American football student athlete, and to Coach Dan Atencio and his staff.
Photography Students Make Their Mark
Four De Anza photography students placed as finalists in the prestigious Photo Forum Magazine’s hardcover book, “Best of College Photography 2012.” The photographs of Karan Ahuja, Brian Rose, Alejandro Tapia and Lisa Teng were chosen from more than 17,700 images. This is Teng’s second time as a finalist.
Another De Anza photography student, Yu Jing, has been included in the Triton Museum of Art’s statewide competition and exhibition. Her work received an honorable mention for creativity. Two Employees From De Anza Honored for Contributions
Head Women’s Tennis Coach Coleen Lee-Wheat and Fitness Center Coordinator C.J. Jones have been named educator of the year and staff member of the year, respectively, by the California Community Colleges Physical Educators group. The group annually recognizes staff and faculty members for their contributions to their college overall as well as their activities that support physical education and athletics.

Carlos Charter School in Belmont on Fridays, teaching 10- to 12-year olds how to make
dishes such as chocolate sushi, fresh pasta and ravioli and multicolored pasta sheets.
“They have a blast,” Gannon says.

French Instructor’s Jazz Singing Featured in National Magazine
Laura Karst is a jazz vocalist who recently released her debut solo CD, Little Did I Dream. Track and Field Teams Have Great Season
De Anza’s Track and Field Teams were outstanding at the Coast Conference Championships of April 28. The men’s team captured the first Coast Conference Championship in school history and the women’s team came in second. Congratulations to both teams and Coach Nick Mattis.
Women’s Tennis Team Makes the Playoffs
Congratulations to Coach Ron Ward and to our Women’s Tennis Team for making it to the Dual Team playoffs this year. Additionally, the following student athletes were chosen to represent De Anza at the NorCal Championships:

Softball Team Finishes Third in Coast Conference
For the first time in many years, the Softball Team also qualified for the regional tournament and had an overall good season with a record of 20-14. Honored at the conference:

- Casey Showalter – First Team All-Conference Player and All Nor-Cal Player, named De Anza’s Scholar-Athlete for 2012 and transferring to Menlo College to play softball

Photography Students Exhibit Works, Receive Awards
- Lisa Teng placed as a finalist in Photographer’s Forum magazine’s 30th Annual Student Photograph Contest (2010) sponsored by Nikon.
- Jing Yu had an image selected for inclusion in the Center for Photographic Art 2012 web gallery, a second image included in the Triton Museum of Art’s 2012 Statewide Photography Competition and Exhibition, and a third image in the Society for Photographic Education (SPE) 2012 Women’s Caucus Exhibition.
- Manami Yamamoto, Lisa Teng, Jing Yu and a former student Clifford Nichols all attended the National Conference of the Society for Photographic Education for three days in San Francisco.
- Ming Chow, Lisa Teng, Manami Yamamoto, and Jing Yu all had work accepted in the 2012 San Jose Historical Photography competition.
Film/TV Alumnus Wins Filmmaking Grant
De Anza Film/TV Department alumnus Mohammad Gorjestani (and Malcolm Pullinger) won a $33,000 grant from for their screenplay “Somehow These Days Will Be Missed” from the San Francisco Film Society and Kenneth Rainin Foundation. Gorjestani transferred from De Anza to the Vancouver Film School, where he completed “Sayeh” (The Shade) in 2007. The short premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was selected as YouTube’s No. 1 pick in the film/animation category in May 2007.
“Sayeh” was programmed at more than 30 international festivals, winning best film at the British Columbia Student Film Festival and the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival. In association with the Vancouver Film School, “Sayeh” was picked up by BBC, screened on Asiana Airlines Flights in 2008, and received coverage in American Cinematographer and MovieMaker Magazines in 2008. La Voz Wins Awards
The student newspaper picked up seven awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges convention held March 22-24 in Burbank. Nine journalism students and their adviser, Cecilia Deck, attended the conference. Winners include:

- Sara Gobets, second place for feature photo
- Michael Mannina, honorable mention for copyediting
- Leila Forouhi, honorable mention for sport writing

Campus Researcher Honored for Dissertation
Mallory Newell is the winner of the 2012 RP Award for Dissertation Excellence. The RP Group provides leadership in research, planning and assessment within the California Community College System. Her dissertation, “An Exploration of Civic Engagement of Community College Students and Graduates,” explores the civic engagement of current two- and four-year students and adults to better understand differences among those who achieved a high school diploma, associate or bachelor’s degree.
Dean of Admissions and Records Honored
Kathleen Moberg received a “Spirit of Innovation” award from Credentials Solutions at the California Association of Community College Registrars and Admissions Officers (CACCRAO) convention in April. Credentials Solutions is a service and technology vendor that processes transcripts and produces parking permits and Eco Passes for De Anza College.
Instructor Honored for Education Contributions
Early Childhood Education instructor Mayra Cruz was named “Educator of the Year” by the Association of Mexican American Educators of the Silicon Valley on May 10. The award is given to instructors who inspire, challenge and motivate students to academic success, and for engaging, empowering and educating students and parents to become involved leaders in the community.
Counselor’s Play to Be Produced for Festival
De Anza counselor and part-time playwright Rob Clem’s play “Tethered”will be produced in Northport, New York this summer in the It Happened One Act play festival. The first production of “Tethered”was in the Eight Tens at Eight Festival for the Actor’s Theatre of Santa Cruz in 2010.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel described the play as “a touching and haunting look at the relationship between a recluse father and his grown son.” As a former member of the Foothill College Playwriting Program, Clem has had several plays (mostly comedies) produced in the Bay Area over the last 10 years. Clem’s reaction to learning about the New York production is a resounding, “Yeah, now I’m bi-coastal!”
Puente Project Recognized by University of California
Congratulations to De Anza College’s Puente Project! The University of California presented the college’s Puente Project with a Certificate of Recognition for its 10-year anniversary. De Anza appreciates the work and dedication of Alicia Cortez, Patty Guitron-Burgos, Paula Silva, Jesus Quintero, Becky Roberts, and numerous mentors and students.
Classified Professionals from De Anza Stand Out
- William Baldwin, Program Analyst and president of South Bay Writers (Santa Clara Branch), had his poem selected for publication in “Carry the Light,” San Mateo County Fair Literary Anthology 2012.
- Sharon Berg, Computer Operations Coordinator, was the subject of a Sports Illustrated article published May 7, “Testing the Waters” by Nancy Ramsey. Berg was given one of the first Title IX scholarships in swimming.
- Lisa Kirk, Accountant in Student Accounts, was recognized for her work as a volunteer with Furry Friends Pet Assisted Therapy Services. She also received a Certificate of Appreciation for her volunteer work at the Saratoga Retirement Community for visiting the elderly with her dogs Honey and Buster.
- John Legois, Instructional Associate with the Hope-De Anza Program, was appointed to a three-year term on the San Jose Disability Advisory Commission. Members of the commission study, review, evaluate and make recommendations to the San Jose City Council relative to any and all matters affecting persons with disabilities in San Jose, including education, employment, housing, transportation, recreation and access to programs and services citywide.
- Jorge Morales, Outreach Assistant in the Office of Outreach and Relations With Schools, has earned his master’s degree in counseling.
- Joseph Ng, Senior Administrative Assistant for A&R (F-1 Visas), was certified by the International Chinese Martial Arts Championship (ICMAC) World Circuit as an official judge. “Sifu” Ng was promoted to Head Judge in the 1st annual ICMAC Golden Gate Chinese Martial Arts Championship held in San Francisco.
