The Transfer Edge Program is a specially designed summer program for newly admitted transfer students who have
been admitted to UC Berkeley for the coming fall. Transfer Edge gives newly admitted
transfer students an early start on their Berkeley experience by offering them the
opportunity to take summer courses that fulfill breadth, prerequisite, and major requirements
ahead of most incoming students, learn about the campus and its many resources before
fall semester through our orientations and workshops, and to build community with
their peers through our social events.
Opting in to Transfer Edge carries no program fee, only the Berkeley Summer Sessions
undergraduate tuition of $419 per unit, the one-time-only campus fee of $419, and
the $48 class pass. For students who are eligible for financial aid and enroll in
six units, summer aid can be used to cover these costs.
Through the Transfer Edge program, students have the opportunity to choose from the
full catalog of campus-based and online Summer Sessions courses. Having this chance
to take courses with fellow Berkeley students, Transfer Edge participants gain familiarity
with the academic experience of being a Berkeley student, and find confidence navigating
these academic spaces before fall semester begins.
Students who participate in this program share with us that they hugely value the
unique experience of starting their Berkeley experience with Transfer Edge. Our Transfer
Edge participants gain key familiarity and comfort accessing campus resources, have
that extra bit of time to make friends and build community, gain confidence and a
sense of belonging, and manage the transition to life as a Berkeley student smoothly.
Through participation in the Transfer Edge program, students are also able to access
summer enrichment opportunities specifically geared towards new transfer admits: One
such opportunity is the Transfer Connect mentorship course, a version of the popular Berkeley Connect mentoring program, specially
designed just for Transfer Edge students. Through Transfer Connect, Transfer Edge
students will be matched with a UC Berkeley graduate student who will be their mentor
for the summer, and placed in a small group of transfer student peers who will meet
weekly for discussions facilitated by their mentor. Through one-on-one and group mentoring,
students build their support network and chart their path at Berkeley.
An exciting new opportunity for both Transfer Edge and prospective transfer students
to take advantage of this coming summer is the Physics Pre-Core Transfer Summer Program. This program is designed specifically to help prospective and newly-admitted transfer
students strengthen their skills to transition successfully into physics, astrophysics,
and earth and planetary science (EPS) majors at UC Berkeley. Students benefit from
a two-course summer curriculum in either Mathematical Physics or Computational Techniques
in Physics tracks, guest speakers, and specialized academic and pre-professional guidance.
Participants are also able to community-build with fellow transfer students in their
major. To learn more about the curriculum and topics covered, please refer to the
attached Physics Pre-Core Transfer Summer Program flier. Students not yet admitted
to UC Berkeley can participate in this program by enrolling in the courses as a Summer
Sessions visiting student.
